A call for all Egyptian youths under the age of 30 to participate in the fifth round of Roznama competition and exhibition for contemporary visual arts to be held in September 2016.

Roznama is an annual competition and exhibition for contemporary visual arts for Egyptian youths, organized by Medrar for Contemporary Art and the exhibitions will take place at Medrar venue in Garden City, Mashrabiya Gallery- downtown, SOMA in Zamalek in September 2016

The competition aims to encourage creative contemporary experiences for youths under the age of 30 through highlighting the outstanding creative works using all art Medias, traditional and experimental ones.

Medrar aspires through the competition to monitor and follow up on the outstanding artworks of the creative young artists to include them in network of service beneficiaries and to support them by all available means.

 Awards

  • Three months residency at Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris- France. Presented by Institute Francais.*

*Residency award will include all logistical expenses, including, flight tickets, accommodation and studio facilities in addition to per-diem.

 Guidelines and Conditions of Participation 

  • The applicant is allowed to apply for one project/ one application form at most. In case, applicant sent more than one form; all submitted projects will be excluded.
  • The submitted art work projects should be produced during 2015-2016
  • The age of the participant should not exceed 30 years at the opening of Roznama in September 2016.
  • The participant should be Egyptian
  • Roznama neither accepts any art work participated in previous Egyptian competitions or contests, nor graduation projects  
  • The competition organizers have the right to select the works and projects in accordance with the presentation area and available potentialities.
  • All participating works in all its types should not exceed an area of 2 meters.
  • Any form submitted without the payment of the subscription fees of 25 L.E will not be considered. The subscription fees will not be reimbursed by any means.  
  • The competition organizers select the jury committee, who in turn selects the participating and winning works without any intervention from the contest organizers, the institutions or the persons supporting the contest.
  • Announcement of jury committee will be announced after the opening of the exhibition in September.
  • Only applicants whose works were selected to participate in the exhibition will be notified not later than15th July 2016 via e-mail.
  • Medrar is entitled to use some of the participating works in the competition (photos or videos) or part of them in the promotional material along with retaining the property rights.
  • The exhibition will be inaugurated on Wednesday 7th September and it will last till 29th September 2016. All participants shall receive their works immediately after the show not later than 4th October 2016. The organizers are entitled to dispose of their artworks after that date.
  • Roznama accepts various mediums as: photography- paintings – sculpture – installations- digital art- video art – performance art- sound art and others.
  • The competition department does not assume any breach of intellectual property rights in any participant work. Participants must take into account to obtain permission in case of presenting any art work borrowed from third parties.

 How to participate via internet 

  • Fill in the e-application below the page
  • Upload the video files, enclosed photos and copy of ID via https://www.wetransfer.com. The site will send a link to download the file immediately after finishing the upload. Please copy this link within the allocated space within the subscription form (we recommend the completion of the uploading process before start filling in the form data).
  • Please keep in mind that the uploaded files remain available on the site for two weeks maximum, so you must consider sending the form immediately upon getting the download link.
  • In case of sending video works, the file should be of high quality ( copy for screening)
  • You should attach 3 different high quality photos of the artistic work
  • You should attach copy of ID and send it with the subscription form
  • Artworks sent without filling in the subscription form will not be considered
  • It is strictly prohibited to deliver the subscription form via hand deliver or CDs
  • After notifying the participant artists, artworks will be delivered in conformity with the work sent in the subscription form. In case of non compliance with the deadlines of delivery, the participation is void. The artist also bears all details of the implementation of the artistic work in coordination with the exhibition coordinator.
  • Sending a request of participation is an the approval of the terms and conditions of participation in the Roznama competition

Medrar organizes open meetings with artists and cultural managers on how to present the projects; it will be announced later through website and social media channels.

Medrar is organizing an open day session for all those who are applying to Roznama 5 with participation of artists and culture managers. Workshop – Origami (paper folding)

This workshop provides an introduction to the art of origami and how to use it as a medium in other arts practices or media. The trainers work with the artists to explore the language of origami through simple and practical exercises. The team will also work on implementing the artists’ project proposals, which could be sculptural works or installations, photography, animated films, fashion, architectural designs, and interactive artworks. etc.

This workshop targets visual artists, including photographers and sculptors, as well as designers, directors, animation filmmakers, architects, fashion designers, etc.

Origami: It is a Japanese art that relies on folding paper to create creative designs and ideas and contribute to providing innovative solutions in all aspects of life.

The workshop will be held in Medrar from Saturday, April 30, 2016 to Tuesday, May 24, 2016

8 lectures, Saturday and Tuesday every week from 5 pm to 8 pm.

Followed by a three-day exhibition of the workshop’s products.

The first three lectures to learn the principles, basics and rules of origami.
The next five lectures are divided equally to work on trainees’ projects.
Workshop fees: 700 pounds, including materials, to be paid at the Medrar headquarters before the start of the workshop.

Open Call- The Mesh – Video art & Experimental films workshop

Video Art and Experimental Film Production workshop

We are thrilled to resume the activities of Cairo Video Festival 7 by announcing a call for applications for a production workshop for video art and experimental films.

The workshop will take place from 16 March until 16 April at Medrar.

The workshop targets visual artists; and prior experience in video art making and previous works are not a prerequisite.

Five projects will be selected to be produced during the workshop, with up to 1,000 USD as production budget per piece, to be produced under the supervision of both trainers.

The workshop includes 12 sessions, jointly led by Peter Aerschmann and Mark Lotfy, during which concepts will be discussed, developed, and produced. And some of which will be technical on editing, cinematography, animation, and production.

We encourage applicants from outside Cairo to apply; Medrar is able to provide accommodation for one participant from outside Cairo during the month of the workshop.

Terms & Conditions:
Participant must commit to attending all the sessions on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 6pm until 9pm.
Participant must bring a laptop during the sessions. It is preferable to have a DSLR camera too.

Basic tasks:

– Dealing with the chartered accountant, understanding his recommendations and adhering to them, and providing him with the necessary files on a regular basis, especially annually to prepare the tax return.

Naema’s Office is Bleeding 2 – Painting & Collage workshop

Medrar for Contemporary Art announces a call for applications for an advanced workshop on painting and collage techniques by artist Hany Rashed from 10 February until 7 March 2016.

The workshop is intended for artists with previous experience/ background in painting and collage. It aims to introduce participants to different practices and techniques in painting and collage and to train them on different approaches to conception of artworks and projects. The training is applied on topics related to media and internet as open sources of creativity.

Workshop is moderated by artist Hany Rashed, with the participation of distinguished guest artists who will share their personal and professional experience, as well as add to the historical and artistic content of the workshop.

A group exhibition comprising the output of the workshop, curated by the workshop moderator, will be held at the end of the program from 10 to 21 March 2016.

Conditions for participation

Visual art Competition and Exhibition from Egypt

Medrar for Contemporary Art invites emerging Egyptian artists under the age of 30 to participate in the fourth edition of Roznama, Contemporary Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition, which will be held in September 2015.

Roznama is an annual competition and exhibition of contemporary visual arts by young Egyptian artists, organized by Medrar for Contemporary Art. The edition is organized in cooperation with the Contemporary Image Centre, the exhibition of which will be held in September 2015 at Medrar Space in Garden City and at the Contemporary Image Collective in Downtown Cairo.

The competition aims to encourage contemporary creative experiences for youth under the age of 30 by highlighting outstanding creative works using all artistic media, traditional and experimental. 

Through the competition, Medrar hopes to monitor and follow up on outstanding artworks as well as creative emerging artists to include them in the network of beneficiaries of its services and to support them in all available ways.

Prizes:

  • Cash prizes: First prize (1000 USD) – Second prize (500 USD)*

 Guidelines and Conditions of Participation:

  • The applicant is allowed to apply with only one project / one application form. If the applicant sends more than one form all submitted projects will be rejected.
  • The submitted artwork projects should be produced during 2014 – 2015
  • Participants cannot be older than 35 years of age as of September 2015.
  • The participant must be an Egyptian national.
  • Roznama does not accept any artwork previously exhibited in any Egyptian competitions or contests.
  • Roznama does not accept graduation projects.   
  • The competition organizers have the right to select the artworks and projects in accordance with the exhibition space and the facilities available within the space. 
  • Artworks, regardless of their category, are given a maximum space of 2 meters.
  • Participating in Roznama does not require any presentation fees, and the competition does not offer any offer fees.
  • The competition organizers assign the jury committee. The participants’ selection and the winners’ selection processes are held by the jury only. Neither the organizers, institutions, nor partners will be involved in these processes.
  • The jury committee members will be announced after the opening of the exhibition in September.
  • Only applicants whose artworks are selected to participate in the exhibition will be notified via email, no later than July 16.
  • Medrar has the right to utilize photos/videos from the artworks that participated in the competition for publicity while keeping the copyrights.
  • The exhibition opens on Thursday, September 3 and runs until September 30, 2015. All participants must receive their work immediately after the exhibition. Please note that the organizers have the right to dispose of the artwork after this date.
  • Roznama accepts visual artworks such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation art, video and moving images, digital art, interactive art, performance art, and sound art.

  • It is important to note that uploaded files are only available on WeTransfer for a period that is not longer than two weeks.
  • In the case of submitting video art, the attached file must be of high quality.
  • Attach 3 different HD photos of the artwork.

Generator  workshop

A project that aims to invite participants interested in video and experimental film to engage in active learning and practice of video production and related disciplines. Encouraging artists to develop collaborative projects.

The workshop is scheduled for two weeks starting September 15th to 29th, followed by four weeks of post production.

Projects will be funded by Medrar and Pro Helvetia, and the final productions will be screened during the 6th Cairo Video Festival, November 5th 2014.

The workshop will be mentored by Christoph Oertli from Switzerland and Mohamed Abdelkarim from Egypt.

Open Call – Swarm

Medrar Workshop for Video is a project aimed at bringing participants to interact with a group of lecturers and facilitators in a workshop that relies on delving into theoretical and practical practices to explore the vocabulary and elements of film/video, aesthetically and conceptually, and how to consume the elements of cinematic composition and the emerging practices in the field of video in producing experiences with a unique language. Therefore, the workshop’s methodology works in the context of cinematic language as a medium and tools that we can exploit to produce an experimental film with a unique language.

The workshop will host lecturers to present their experiences in film/video and to understand their production methodologies. Medrar Workshop for Video aims to produce a video (experimental film) – through lecturers, presentations, theoretical readings, and practical application that takes place over three weeks, with the support of Medrar Video Library.

The workshop targets 5 to 6 participants, and selection is based on the applicants who submit projects and ideas that are aware of how to deal with the contents and elements of film/video, which we see as a starting point for producing experimental films that are rich in cinematic language, its elements, and contents.

5th Cairo Video Festival | Medrar for Contemporary Art

The Cairo Video Festival is a platform to start a conversation between video-artists, curators and the public,
and a space for artists to showcase their innovative, low budget video art productions that are selected
according to quality, authenticity and conviction in investigation of subject matter.
Through ten days of screenings, artists talks, and discussions, the Cairo Video Festival fosters this growing
interest in new media production and experimentation to expose audiences to artists and concepts from
around the world.

The festival is Medrar’s first contribution to the art scene in 2005 and is the project through which Medrar
was later established. It started as a collective of visual artists who were experimenting with a new medium
and took initiative to establish themselves the space in which their works, along with works from all over the
world, would be shown in the heart of this vigorous city.
Job Description: Handling the festival’s administrative and logistical side

Main Duties:
● Prepare the material for the jury selection
● Follow up with meetings & deadlines for the jury
● Manage the space, its maintenance and handle procurements for the jury selection process
